Kuching, Sarawak, Jun 5 (Antara) - Low-cost carrier AirAsia has opened a new flight route from Pontianak in West Kalimantan to Kuching in Sarawak, Malaysia, on Monday.

"This has shown the commitment of PT Angkasa Pura II Pontianak to support the tourism sector," General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura II for Supadio Airport branch in Pontianak, Bayuh Iswantoro, said on the sideline of initial flight routing Pontianak-Kuching on Monday.

He stated that the state-run airport operator would provide incentive for airlines which opened their new route from Supadio airport in Pontianak of West Kalimantan.

CEO Airasia Berhad Aireen Omar stated that the new route would facilitate passengers from both Pontianak and Kuching. "This has become our commitment to support development in Pontianak as a new destination. At the same time, it would also enable people to enjoy the beauty of Kuching."

AirAsia has offered a promotion price of Rp249 thousand for tickets booked online at its website www.airasia.com until June 18, for flights scheduled from June 5 to Jan 14, 2018.

The two-hour flight is expected to benefit people from both cities, Indonesia`s vice consul general in Kuching Muhammad Abdullah noted. "We still have many potential that could be explored in both regions."

In addition to Pontianak-Kuching, the low-cost carrier has also opened Pontianak-Kuala Lumpur flight route.
