Pontianak, W Kalimantan, Oct 24 (Antaranews Kalbar) - The West Kalimantan police has seized a truck carrying 300 logs of illegal rare ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri) or locally known as belian wood from Ketapang district.
"The truck with plate number KB 9894 HE steered by Su was detained in Toba subdistrict of Sanggau district on Tuesday by the West Kalimantan police` special crime unit," West Kalimantan police chief Insp.Gen Didi Haryono said here on Wednesday.
The arrest was made after the patrolling police, suspicious on the truck activity, make a random check to the truck and found the rare ironwood without legal document.
"We would not compromise to perpetrators of illegal logging. There will be legal process on this," he said, adding that illegal logging has harmed the environment in the region.
Currently, the police has kept the ironwood in Tayan police precinct in Sanggau for further legal process.
While the driver Su and his assistant Bu were detained at West Kalimantan police headquarters for further investigation.
The suspect would be charged with article 83 of law no. 18/2013 on eradication of deforestation, Didi said.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has put the belian wood on its red list of threatened species.
The ironwood has some of the hardest and most durable timbers in the world. It is also resistant to infection from bacteria and fungi and retains a lemon odour post-manufacture, making it an extremely popular tree among timber exporters.
Indonesia has a total prohibition on export, and cutting is restricted to trees less than 60 cm diameter measured at breast height.
