Pontianak, W Kalimantan (Antaranews Kalbar) - The province of West Kalimantan is set to chalk up bigger rice harvest in 2018 with expanded rice fields.
"Today we have working meeting discussing ways of reaching the target for the program to expand planting area in October, 2017 until March 2018," head of Agricultural Extension, Human Resources and Farm Development of the provincial Agriculture Office Momon Rusmono said here on Saturday.
Momon said target of expansion from October, 2017 top March 2018 is set at 250,000 hectares and until December, 2017, the expansion already reached around 200,000 hectares.
"Thanks God, rice planting areas in the province for October to December, 2017 were 6,000 hectare wider than in the same period in 2016," he said.
He said with the expansion of the cultivation, the target for harvest ares and rice production would also increase in 2018.
The planting areas in last quarter of 2017 was already 6,000 hectares exceeding the requirement of the province, he said.
He said the performance in the first three months of this year is expected to be better than performance in the same period last year.
"In January, 2017, West Kalimantan succeeded in expanding planting areas by 9,000 hectares, therefore, in January, 2018, expansion should be at least 9,100 hectares," he said.
In February, expansion is also expected to be wider than in the same month last year, he added. *
