Pontianak, W Kalimantan, March 23 (Antaranews Kalbar) - A patrolling ship of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has arrested three Vietnamese vessels for illegal fishing in North Natuna waters.

"The fishing boats and 24 Vietnamese crew members were arrested while they were operating illegally in North Natuna waters on Sunday," an official of Pontianak Fishery Resources Monitoring Station Erwin said here on Thursday.

The three fishing boats and the Vietnamese crew members have been brought to the station`s jetty for further legal process, he stated.

They were accused of violating law no. 45/2009 on amendment of law no. 31/2004 on fishery and article 55 of the criminal code.

A data of the ministry indicated that the West Kalimantan waters are highly prone to illegal fishing committed by foreign fishermen.

Three regions in Indonesia that have been favorite for illegal fishing due to its abundant resource of fish and other fishery products are Natuna, Arafura, and northern area of North Sulawesi.

West Kalimantan waters are included in Zone III, along with Natuna, Karimata, and South China Sea, with fishery catch potential of one million tons per year.

The waters cover an area of 26 thousand square kilometers to South China Sea, which includes 2 million hectares of public waters; 26.7 thousand hectares of fishpond area; and 15.5 thousand hectares of sea.
