Pontianak (Antaranews Kalbar) - General Manager of the West Kalimantan unit of the state-owned electricity company PT PLN Rachmad Lubis said three units of steam fired power plants (PLTU) would come on stream.

"This year we still have three PLTUs to be put into operation in West Kalimantan. They are PLTU 3 in Bengkayang with a capacity of 2x50 MW, PLTU 2, with a capacity of 2x20.5 MW also in Bengkayang, and PLTU 1 in Mempawah with a capacity of 2x50 MW. However, as time is too short we would likely put into operation only one unit of PLTU 3 with a capacity of 50 MW in December this year," Rachmad said here on Tuesday.

The unit 2 of PLTU 3 with a capacity of 50 MW would follow early 2019, he said.

Rachmad said there are difficulties in putting into operation PLTU 3 . One of the problems is financial difficulty as a result of the falling value of rupiah against the U.S. dollar. The dollar appreciation caused an increase in the price of basic materials.

"Construction of PLTU 3 in Bengkayang began in 2011, but as the construction took several years it was hit by the appreciation of the U.S. dollar that resulted in an increase in the prices of basic materials," he said.

In 2009, a dollar was only Rp9,000 , but starting 2012 the dollar continued to rise against rupiah that the price of machines and component increased.

"That is the reasons for contractors of the PLTU units were facing financial difficulty in the procurement of machines and components, which have to be imported and paid with dollar," Rachmad said.

Other problem is a mistake in the selection of the location of one of the PLTU units . Relocation of the project took a year that resulted in delay in construction.

"However, despite the difficulty we are set to finish the process of construction without too much delay. Though delayed the program will continue though not very as expected," he said.
