Pontianak (Antaranews Kalbar) – There are 21 green turtles and hawksbill dead scales from February to April 2018, allegedly due to asphaltic asphalt poisoning in the coastal area of Paloh Beach, Sambas District, West Kalimantan.

"Dozens of turtles were dead because of asphalt poisoning. The turtle's body is found along the turtle landing beach outside of Tanjung Belimbing Nature Park (TWA)," said  Head of Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) Kalbar, Sadtata Noor Adirahmanta.

He explained, during the patrol, the team also found some asphalt clumps and garbage in a considerable amount on the beach.

Based on the results of necropsy conducted on five turtle samples consisting of four green turtles, and one hawksbill, there are four positive turtles contained asphalt tar deposits on the turtle's organs so that strong indications of turtle death due to swallowing the asphalt tar, he said.

He added that the incidence of dead sea turtles along the coast of Paloh Beach, not only occurred recently, within two months, in February-March 2018, found a total of 21 carrion turtles and three of which have been done necropsy.

According to him, BKSDA Kalbar will take follow-up, among others collecting data and information related to where the asphalt tar came from and garbage that pollute the waters around the coast of Paloh, and beach clean-up action with the parties, even if deemed necessary will be further research related to seawater quality and chemical test of black liquor samples suspected of such asphalt.

On that occasion, Head of West Kalimantan BKSDA also convey a message to the people of West Kalimantan to care more about the sustainability of turtles and other wildlife.

The beach along the 63 kilometers in Coastal Paloh is the largest turtle landing habitat in West Kalimantan. Not only turtle populations are currently threatened, even turtle habitats are also threatened by land conversion activities for various designations such as regional development and development.

"We hope that with our concern for turtle conservation, the sustainability of turtles will be realized. This is because the turtle is currently Apenddix I CITES, which means its presence in the wild is endangered, and also entered into the list of protected animals based on PP 7/1999 on the Preservation of Plant and Animal Species. However, the provision of protection status alone is not sufficient, if not accompanied by concrete actions in conservation efforts," he said.

One of the real efforts that it has done is the existence of a turtle conservation program through the "Suka Penyu", where its supporters have been built by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry through BKSDA Kalbar at TWA Tanjung Belimbing, Paloh. It is expected that with the Turtle Sequence, the activities of turtle conservation both within conservation area (TWA Tanjung Belimbing) and outside conservation area can be synergized.

"Related to the management of the turtle asylum, in the near future KalSD KSDA, will invite various parties such as Sambas Regency Government, universities, related institutions, conservation partners and the community of Paloh Subdistrict to "talk about the implementation of the turtle asylum program going forward," he said.

For further information BKSDA Kalbar has opened the phone number of the complaints of plants and wildlife through the connection, with the number 08115776767 or through 0561-735635.
