Pontianak, W. Kalimantan, July 17 (Antaranews Kalbar) - The Mempawah Meteorology office (BMKG) on Tuesday warned people in West Kalimantan against using fire to clear farm lands to prevent forest fires.

In ten days, it is predicted that hot spots would begin to appear that would easily trigger big fires, head of the BMKG office Wandayantolis said via telephone from Mempawah.

He said in the next 10 days it is feared there would be no rain while dry winds are blowing fast from southeast to the south of the region.

"We called on the people to see the potential danger of the hot spots and an increase in the air temperature," he said.

Earlier, West Kalimantan police chief Ins.Gen. Didi Haryono said most forest and farm land fires in the province were caused by the carelessness of the people.

"Almost 99 percent of forest fires in the province are blameable on people`s lack of sense of responsibility," Didi said.

Therefore, the people need to be given greater awareness of the potential danger of using fires to clear farm lands, he said.

Police in cooperation with other related institutions have taken preparations to prevent or cope with forest fires, by building water canals or water pools needed in the event of fires.

"Based on our past record, there are around 182 spots potential to trigger forest fires located in various districts of West Kalimantan, Areas where fires more frequent are Ketapang and Kubu Raya," ujarnya.

The general said police would act against those found using fires to clear their farm lands in line with the regulation.

The West Kalimantan Regional Disaster Control Agency said six helicopters would be ready to carry out patrol and to help fire fighters in the event of forest fires.

The helicopters are ready any time and they are located in different areas in the province including in Ketapang, and Kayong Utara, and in Sintang, to protect Kapuas Hulu and Melawi, and in Singkawang and Sambas.

Three more units of helicopters are placed in the airport of Supadi of Pontianak to be ready in the event of fires in Kubu Raya, Mempawah, Landak, Bengkayang and Sanggau.

Forest fires have been a big problem in the country almost every year in dry season. Forest fires especially in Kalimantan and Sumatra sent thick smoke as far way as Singapore and Malaysia, disrupting flight schedules.

President Joko Widodo himself has expressed concern with possible forest fires especially in South Sumatra disrupting the big sport event of Asian Games to be held in the South Sumatra capital of Palembang next month. (SYS/AS).
